 Lithuania
The Marians have been
active in Lithuania for centuries. The hub of activity for the
Congregation in the country is still in Marijampole, just as it
was during the lifetime of Blessed George Matulaitis-Matulewicz.
Archbishop George worked
out a plan to establish new dioceses, appoint new bishops, and
establish relations between the Holy See and Lithuania.
On June 28, 1987, at
the close of the celebration of 500 years since the conversion
of Lithuania to Christianity, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed
George, calling him "a special gift to the Church and to
the Lithuanian people."
Blessed George's tomb
is located in the lateral chapel of the monastery church in Marijampole.
It's a popular pilgrimage site for many Lithuanian Catholics who
come seeking his intercession for personal needs.
With the help of their
confreres, the Lithuanian Marians are rebuilding after the collapse
of communism. A major highlight was the reopening of the Marian
novitiate in Marijampole in the mid-1990s. The Association of
Marian Helpers is also established and growing in Lithuania under
the Marians' direction.
