\"\"One of the highest national decorations of France \u2013 the National Order of Merit \u2013 was presented to Fr.\u00a0Adam Boniecki,\u00a0MIC.<\/p>\n

Father Adam Boniecki, the editor-in-chief of \u201cTygodnik Powszechny\u201d for many years and, according to the French Ambassador, \u201ca Francophile known for his longtime dedication to the Polish-French dialogue,\u201d became the Commander of the National Order of Merit. The ambassador added that in\u00a01999, as the editor-in-chief of \u201cTygodnik Powszechny,\u201d Fr.\u00a0Boniecki contributed to the newspaper becoming \u201can open and critical forum of the Catholic intellectuals, a group whose activities prompt the Polish public to discuss such topics as the role of the Church in the new Poland or the evolution of the concept of a nation in the united Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour personality, high moral authority, openness, and tolerance, your stance in defending freedom of speech and democracy \u2013 these are the values, also dear to France, which made you a prominent figure in the 21st-century Polish Church,\u201d said Mr.\u00a0Buhler.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you very much for this decoration. I\u00a0am deeply moved,\u201d said Fr.\u00a0Boniecki in his brief speech. \u201cWhy does one feel so moved because of a decoration? I\u00a0have to go back 30\u00a0years to the time when I worked at the Vatican, editing the Polish version of \u201cL\u2019Osservatore Romano,\u201d the only foreign-published newsletter admitted to Poland. Our government took a great interest in this work (…). What manpower, what effort has been put into spying on me, tarnishing me and having expelled from the Vatican! At that time, 30\u00a0years ago, the French president awarded me the same decoration, only of a lower rank,\u201d recalled Fr.\u00a0Boniecki.<\/p>\n

The National Order of Merit was also presented to Fr.\u00a0Jozef Maya, pastor of the St.\u00a0Catherine Parish in S\u0142u\u017cewiec and chaplain of the Independent Students\u2019 Association (NZS) created in\u00a01980 out of students\u2019 organizations opposing the Communist dictatorship. The writer Marek Ostrowski received the Legion of Honor, while Barbara Podmiotko, a journalist, was awarded Order of Arts and Literature.<\/p>\n
