Belarus

One of the key events in the Congregation’s history occurred in Rosica, Belarus, where Fr. Anthony Leszczewicz, MIC, and Fr. George Kaszyra, MIC, were martyred by the Nazis in 1943. Both men were declared Blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1999. Today, the Marians are struggling to raise funds to rebuild the church the Martyrs spent their final hours in. In this extremely poor country, several priests from the Polish (Divine Providence) Province, along with the local Belarussian Marians, serve in over ten (10) parishes. They also offer retreats, catechism in schools, and operate a Shrine devoted to the Marian Martyrs.

Ukraine

Ukraine has been key in the Marians’ efforts to help re-evangelize Eastern Europe after the fall of communism, with the encouragement of Pope John Paul II. About 20 Marians in this country are involved in parish and community outreach work, helping the flood of Ukrainians eager to rediscover the treasures of the faith. The Congregation has also rebuilt and repaired many churches in the former Soviet republic, and then handed them over to local bishops.

Lithuania

The Marians have been active in Lithuania for centuries. The hub of activity for the Congregation in the country is still in Marijampole, just as it was during the lifetime of Blessed George Matulaitis-Matulewicz.

Archbishop George worked out a plan to establish new dioceses, appoint new bishops, and establish relations between the Holy See and Lithuania.

On June 28, 1987, at the close of the celebration of 500 years since the conversion of Lithuania to Christianity, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed George, calling him “a special gift to the Church and to the Lithuanian people.”

Blessed George’s tomb is located in the lateral chapel of the monastery church in Marijampole. It’s a popular pilgrimage site for many Lithuanian Catholics who come seeking his intercession for personal needs.

With the help of their confreres, the Lithuanian Marians are rebuilding after the collapse of communism. A major highlight was the reopening of the Marian novitiate in Marijampole in the mid-1990s. The Association of Marian Helpers is also established and growing in Lithuania under the Marians’ direction.

Poland

Poland has always been the heart of the Congregation’s existence. The Marians were founded near Warsaw more than 350 years ago by Saint Stanislaus Papczynski.

Today, about 200 Marians are involved in active ministry in Poland. The Congregation operates several shrines devoted to Our Lady including a shrine in Lichen, which was blessed by the Holy Father, Saint John Paul II, in 1999. Now completed, the shrine seats more than 7,000 people.

The Polish Marians also operate the Association of Marian Helpers and apostolates that include catechesis for children and teenagers, missions and parish renewal programs, academic work and formation, along with writing and publishing.

Portugal

The Marians have had a presence in Portugal for more than 200 years. Following his term as Superior General of the Congregation, the Venerable Servant of God, Fr. Casimir Wyszynski established the first Marian monastery for the Iberian Peninsula on Mount Balsamão. It is there that he died in 1755. In 1834, the Portuguese government became hostile toward all religious and finally closed all Marian Monasteries in the country.

But in 1954, the Marians returned to Portugal. They took up residence in the beautiful Balsamão Monastery established by Fr. Casimir and brought it back to life. Today, the monastery hosts pilgrims, retreat groups and various religious events. In the local church, devotion to the Divine Mercy is growing along with Marian devotion. Since 2015, Portugal is a vicariate under the Brazilian Province of Divine Mercy.

In Fatima, next to the Shrine of the Blessed Mother, Marians operate a Hostel for Pilgrims.

United States of America

Presently there is just one Marian Province in the United States. It is called the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy Province, and was created on October 19, 2006, as a result of unification of two Provinces: St. Casimir, founded in 1930, with its headquarters in Chicago, Ill., and St. Stanislaus Kostka, established in 1948, with its headquarters in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Marians in the United States are dedicated to promoting devotion to Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception and to The Divine Mercy. They are involved in parish ministry at several parishes in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Alaska. One of their members is an army chaplain, and one – a native of Ghana – serves in that country. Members of the Province also operate missions in Argentina, serving there in pastoral ministry, youth ministry, religious education, and schools.

Brazil

Brazil is home to the newest Marian Province. Even though it was established as a Province in 1998, the Congregation has been working in Brazil since the early 1960s. The Marians began their missionary work in Brazil after responding to appeals from Pope John XXIII during the Second Vatican Council, who asked them to serve as missionaries in South American countries badly in need of priests. Five Marians opened a mission in northern Brazil in 1964. Another group arrived five years later and began working with the poor on the outskirts of Curitiba in the south.

Today, there are about 60 Marian priests, brothers and seminarians in Brazil. They serve in parishes and their associated missions (chapels), assisting Catholic lay movements, as well as tribes of Indians. In some parishes, they have developed programs working with the poorest of the poor. The Marians also operate a Divine Mercy apostolate which has its center at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Curitiba. They also spiritually assist groups of nuns. Since 1977, working with native vocations, the young Province has improved its formation program.

Since 2015, Portugal is a vicariate under the Brazilian Province of Divine Mercy.

Rwanda

The Marians established their Rwandan mission in 1984. The first mission was in the north of the country, in the Mwange parish, diocese of Ruhengeri. Since 1998, the Marians moved to a new parish — Nyakinama of the same diocese. The Formation House for the candidates to the Congregation, Postulants, and Novices is also located there.

The present challenge for our missionary service is undertaking work in Kibeho, diocese of Gikongoro — the site of first Marian apparitions in Africa. Our plans for a new community are complete. Work is currently in progress building a new retreat house.

Presently there are nine Marian priests serving in Rwanda. Our Apostolate concentrates its work on formation of the young people, particularly those who think of entering the religious way of life. We also perform ministry in its largest aspect — spreading of the Marian spirituality, and working for peace and reconciliation through helping victims of the fratricide.

Brief history of the Marians’ missions in Rwanda

1984 — The arrival of the first three Marian missionaries in Rwanda (Fr. Francis Filipiec, MIC, Fr. Zdzislaw Zywica, MIC, and Fr. Thadeus Wyszomierski, MIC).

1986 — The foundation of the Mwange parish in the northern part of Rwanda in the Ruhengeri diocese.

1987 — The Mwange House was erected in Rwanda.

1989-1990 — The arrival of the new missionaries (Fr. Marek Ciebien, MIC, Fr. Julian Sztuczka, MIC, Fr. Leszek Czelusniak, MIC, Fr. Ryszard Gorowski, MIC). The beginning of construction of three churches.

1993 — Begin planning for a Marian spiritual training center in Kiebeho, in southern Rwanda, the place of the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Africa. Fr. Andrew Tokarczyk, MIC, arrived.

1994 — The opening of the Boulogne-Billancourt Mission House in France with Fr. Marius Janiszewski, MIC, as Director.

1997 — The creation of an African vicariate of Our Lady of the Confidence and the beginning of the formation of the first three Rwandans for the Congregation.

1997 — The temporary closing of the Mission House occurred as a stronger commitment to the formation. The construction of the formation house in Nyakinama in the northern part of the country. The arrival of Fr. Ryszard Kusy, MIC, and Fr. Marius Janiszewski, MIC, in Rwanda.

1998 — The six-month suspension of the mission in Rwanda, provoked by the war. The reopening of the Mission House in France occurred.

1999 — The return to Rwanda. It was impossible to return to the Mwange parish, so the Marians re-established their house and parish at Nyakinama in Rwanda. The bishop of Nanterre, France, entrusts the parish of St. Benedict in Issy-les-Moulineaux. The Mission House is re-established there. A new mission in the diocese of Doume Abong Mbang in the southeast of Cameroon was created.

2001 — The religious formation in Rwanda was restarted, the postulate in Nyakinama was opened, and Fr. L. Czelusniak, MIC, returned to Rwanda. The African Vicariate was terminated and two independent houses were established under the direct supervision of the Superior General and his council in Rome.

2002 — The agreement with Bishop Misago regarding Marian service in Kibeho was renewed.

Philippines

The Divine Mercy devotion has been growing in the Philippines since World War II. It was made possible thanks to printed materials produced by Marian priests in the U.S., which American soldiers took with them to the Far East. For many years, bishops and lay faithful have asked the Marian Fathers to come to the Philippines and to deepen their faith and devotion to the Divine Mercy.

Marian priests arrived in the Philippines in 2008 and began ministering in El Salvador, where the Divine Mercy Shrine was being organized, and also in the country capital — Manila. And they still serve there today. In El Salvador, near Cagayan de Oro, Divine Mercy venerators built a 17-meter-tall statue of the merciful Jesus. Stairs, leading to a tiny chapel located in Christ’s Heart, were installed on the rays coming out of the Heart of Jesus. This statue attracts a great many Filipino visitors. The construction of the Shrine and its auxiliary facilities is underway. This site has become a center of prayer and formation for the entire island of Mindanao populated by 28 million residents. It is also a place of promotion of the Divine Mercy movement throughout the country.
In 2012, the Marian Fathers opened a seminary in Manila, which prepares candidates from India and the Philippines for the priesthood.
